The Machu Picchu Historical Reserve is a magical place that fascinates through its vast archaeological, geological formations, unique flora and fauna, and the spectacular cloud forest. What stands in the reserve is the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, one of the best places in the world.

The Incas built the Inca citadel in the late fourteenth century. Over time the fort was covered by vegetation and disappearing at the sight of man. Hiram Bingham, Director of the Peruvian Expedition of the University of Yale, rediscovered Machu Picchu in 1911; since then it has become one of the new 7 Wonders of the Modern World.

Recent research from Yale University revealed that Machu Picchu was not, as Hiram Bingham believed, the birthplace of the Incas and the last stronghold of the Incas during his fight with the Spaniards. Instead, Machu Picchu, built by Pachacutec during the heyday of the empire, was a favorite retreat of the Inca nobility.

The Machu Picchu Historical Reserve is located on the heights of Machu Picchu Pueblo (formerly Aguas Calientes) 2,450 meters (8,038 feet) above sea level. The site covers an area of 32,592 hectares (80 535 acres)
